A new life for your old bag–and for someone who really needs it

Posted by Julie

We know that many of you are “bag collectors,” some of you with closets full of old laptop bags. We’re obviously happy and appreciative when you buy a new bag from Skooba, but we also hate to think of all those poor old bags—some of them perfectly usable but retired for the latest style—going to waste. So here’s a way you can put them to good use and do good at the same time.

Dress for Success helps disadvantaged women by preparing them for the workforce with career development services and professional clothing.  Though their greatest need is for business clothing, you can also donate gently used black bags that would be interview and workplace appropriate.  Companies such as Nine West, Ann Taylor, and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics donate clothing and accessories to this worthy cause, putting you in good company if you choose to donate.  For more information head to their website.

There is a similar charity for men, called Career Gear.

Think about giving a new and noble life to your retired business gear, it’s good in so many ways.

iPad Bags? Skooba’s Ready… Already.

Posted by Skooba Design

Step 1: Buy an iPad bag

Step 2: Stare at the empty bag and dream for a few weeks

Step 3: Run to the Apple store in a month or two and enjoy your new toy!

So everyone is pacing around frantically waiting for the day they can sleep outside the Apple store and be the first to get an iPad. Skooba wants to help… at least a little. We can ship you the carrying case now, and you can slip your i-prize into it in a month or two.

We already have three carrying solutions for the upcoming MacTablets: The Netbook/iPad Messenger, Neo Sleeve, and RAPS “portable padding.” And all are available now. (more…)

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Posted by Julie

I sewed my own “Beanie Babies” as a child.  That’s right,  I sewed ‘em up and stuffed ‘em with rice.  I think that was the first hint that I might become a soft goods designer… or one of Santa’s elves.

When these plastic pellet- filled plush toys became a craze, I was just the right age to want them.  But I was also just the right age to be required to use my own money to buy them. And when deciding what to spend my precious birthday money on, N SYNC discs were more of a priority to me than Beanies, so I never accumulated too many of the little critters.

However, not wanting the Beanie fad to completely pass me by, I resorted to sewing my own.  I had already been sewing clothing for my Barbie Dolls for a couple of years, so why not plush toys?  I wasn’t to be trusted using my mother’s sewing machine yet , so I completely hand-stitched my first couple of Beanies. I even made my own little heart-shaped tags for them with made up names, just like the real deal.  I’ve always been obsessed with every little detail–perhaps another hint of what was to come in my adult life. A glimpse into the workings of the TSA (not a glimpse they meant for you to have)

Posted by Michael

Leading travel site www.elliott.org* just posted a fascinating story about the TSA inadvertently releasing a version of its internal operations manual to the public. The Agency is investigating how the document got out, but in the meantime, you have the opportunity to read a version of the TSA’s standard operating procedures manual.

Apparently this particular manual is outdated and has been redone several times since this version, but those who travel frequently may still find some of it interesting and informative. Much of it is boring administrative stuff, but there are a few tidbits in there. For example, apparently it is not against the rules for passengers to take pictures or video in the security area. Yet I have seen many instances where someone was doing just that and was quickly told by a TSA officer to stop. Anyway, I thought the story was interesting… if you’re curious, you can read the whole thing here.

*Disclosure: Skooba Design advertises on elliott.org… but we were readers and fans before that.
