Industrious… by design
Posted by Julie

While I was getting my degree in Industrial Design (or “I.D.” as we call it in the trade), I was amazed at how many people really had no idea what our discipline really is. Most think it is some form of engineering–and while there can certainly be a lot of engineering involved, Industrial Design is not defined by it.
So today I just felt, for no particular reason, like blogging about what it is that we I.D. people do and why we love it…

Meet our receptionist… you might as well, she’s not going anywhere.

Visitors to our office always comment on Mayda Resin, our beautiful receptionist. So we thought you’d like to meet her. Mayda is not only easy on the eyes, but she never leaves her desk, never has a complaint or unfriendly word, and has never asked for a raise. In fact, we don’t even pay her, and she is still at her desk every single day, even weekends.
Although she can be a bit boring, we have been entertained on more than one occasion when a delivery man or other visitor has walked in the front door, and at first glance, shot that “well hello there” look at Mayda. And one or two have even started talking to her before catching on.
If you call our office, you may have the pleasure of speaking to her. But probably not.

Extraordinary customer service sometimes comes where and when you least expect it
Posted by Michael
No offense to the mega-retail world, but I usually don’t expect to get stellar customer service at a national department store (let alone this time of year). But this week I was very pleasantly surprised, and the experience was so refreshing that I felt it worthy of a post.
The other night our dishwasher gave up the ghost after many years and several repairs, and we decided it wasn’t worth another service call. I did some online research, but being impulsive, I decided to call our local Sears store (about an hour before closing) to see what they had to say. I figured I’d get the usual “yeah, um, we got a bunch of washers, the, um, Kenmores are pretty good and we got ‘em on sale. You know, they’re all pretty good, you know, it depends what you want.”
But what I got was very different… (more…)

What to do BEFORE your laptop leaves home without you.

How much time do you spend thinking about your laptop getting lost or stolen? Or preparing for the possibility? Probably little to none. But thousands go missing each year from airports alone, never mind hotel rooms, cafes, and schools. They can even vanish from your own home. Trust me, I know.
I recently had the unfortunate experience of having my apartment broken into. The tech gadget-grabbers nabbed my Skooba Netbook Messenger bag, and that would have been bad enough, even with my generous employee discount. But they also took the netbook inside it, and pretty much all my other electronics and valuables. They almost grabbed my primary, full sized laptop, but luckily dropped it in the hall before taking off. Once the initial shock and anger wore off, my next thought was, what info did they get? What if they hadn’t dropped my main laptop and got even more of my personal and professional data? (more…)

Laptops have shorter life expectancies than field mice
Posted by Michael
A recent study has determined that approximately 1 in 3 laptops die within 3 years, and of those that croak, over 10% of the fatalities are due to drops and related hardware trauma. One of the study’s conclusions/recommendations? Get a good laptop bag! We, um, know a place….
